Last week I tried an experiment with my group. The aim of the experiment was to find out how salty the Murray river was. We Had to measure a certain amout of salt and pour them into different containers. At first I thought the sea water would be the most saltiest but the Murray Rivers water was the most saltiest, that I wanted to cut off my TONGUE! Anyway heres the experiment below.



A Taste Of Salt

Aim

To taste water of known salinity concentrations and compare them to known salinity levels of the sea and the Murray River.

Materials

5 litres of water

5 one litre containers

Salt

Measuring cone marked on side at 1.2cm, 2.3cm, 3.4cm and 11.7cm

Plastic spoons

Hypothesis

I think the salt water will taste the saltiest.

Procedure

1. Measure 1.2cm of salt into the cone.

2. Pour salt into prepared 1 litre container.

3. Repeat steps to one and two for the remaining 4 measurements.

4. Wait for salt to dissolve in the water.

5. Use a disposable spoon to taste the water from each container. (New spoon for each tasting)

Conclusion

The Murray Rivers water was surprisingly the most saltiest of all. It was all most DOUBLE the salt in the sea water.

How Does Salt Affect The Way Plants Grow?

Salt affects the way plants grow because plants need water to survive, and
salt absorbs water. Therefore the plants wouldn’t get any water and would
eventually die. At first I thought that it wouldn’t really make a
difference but after one week, most of the seeds went black, and a few
increased in size. But no seeds have grown. I learnt that salt is danger to
most plants.

In the cup that had no salt added to it, the seeds grew very fast in one week
and had no problems, compared to the salt cup.
